Margaret Hirsch, the Chief Operations Executive of the Hirsch Group, was recently announced as the winner in the Standard Bank sponsored Top Business Woman of South Africa Award at a function that took place at the Emperor’s Palace in Gauteng recently. The Award recognises outstanding leadership, inspiration, and vision, and the ability to shape women’s roles in the private and business sector of the communities in which they operate.
This is Margaret’s 17th major business award. Earlier this year she was announced as the winner of the Queen Victoria Commemorative Medal by the European Business Assembly. At the end of 2015, she won the CEO Global Award for the Most Influential Woman in the Retail and Wholesale Industry for the African Continent. In 2015, She also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from CEO Global for being the Most Influential Woman in the Retail and Wholesale Industry on the African Continent.

Hirsch’s recently hosted their annual Gauteng Supplier Breakfast at the upmarket Moyo Restaurant at Melrose Arch. The event, which is a way in which Hirsch’s thanks their valued Suppliers, was attended by over 80 guests. The Hirsch family expressed their gratitude for the support received over the year. Gauteng’s Regional Operations Manager, Norman Brassell, spoke on the future of Hirsch’s and the importance of continually improving Customer experience – and the crucial role that Suppliers play in achieving this.
Hirsch’s Silverlakes recently hosted their monthly Ladies Networking event, where a highlight of the morning was the announcement of the monthly finalist for the ‘Margaret Hirsch Woman in Business Achiever Award’.
The August finalist, Shamila Ramjawan, owner of Famram Solutions , a Company specialising in Women’s Hygiene products, was thrilled to receive the award. “I am honoured to be recognised as a finalist – Margaret Hirsch is such an inspiration to me”, said Shamila.
The Guest Speaker at the event, Dr Arien van der Merwe – herself a previous finalist of the Award – is a medical doctor, specialising in workplace wellness, body-mind and integrative, natural medicine, stress management and longevity. She writes for, and consults regularly for many magazines and newspapers in South Africa, and appears in countless national radio and TV shows as guest. Dr Arien addressed the audience on Women’s Health – a healthy woman translates to a healthy family and in turn a healthy nation. Due to stresses of modern living, she touched on the importance of building mental resilience – which in turn affect one’s health – through:
- Positive self talk
- Having a sense of humour
- Getting clear about goals, values and priorities
- Being assertive – learning to ask for what you want and need
- Improving communication skills
- Building and maintaining support systems
- Investing in relationships
After a most informative talk, those present where given the opportunity to present themselves and their business in a 30-second ‘elevator pitch’. After some lovely lucky draw prizes were won, informal networking over a cappuccino took place – with business cards being exchanged.

Excitement is mounting to see who will be the Gauteng winners of the MARGARET HIRSCH WOMAN IN BUSINESS ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR competition! A Gala evening is being held at the Ballroom, Montecasino Blvd. at Fourways in Sandton on October 14 to announce the winners from Fourways, Strubens Valley, Centurion, Silverlakes, Meadowdale and Boksburg.

The Hirsch Group, the largest independently owned retail company in Southern Africa, was voted as the top company in the Trade Sector at the 10th KZN Top Business Awards ceremony that was held at the Greyville Convention Centre in Durban recently. This is the second time they have won the award.
The Top Business Awards, which are powered by the Elan Property Group, honour the achievements of KZN’s thriving economy by identifying and celebrating business success in the province in a variety of business categories. They include: Agriculture, Mining, Manufacturing, Utilities, Construction, Trade, Transport, Financial and Business Services, Social and Community Services, Tourism, Municipal promotions and Government. Factors such as brand and reputation, stakeholder relations and goodwill, environmental sustainability, social responsibility and quality of governance are all taken into account with regards to the awards.
Accepting the award on behalf of the Hirsch Group, Brand Manager of the company, Luci Hirsch said “We are extremely proud to accept this award. My parents, Allan and Margaret Hirsch started the company 37 years ago with a few basic principles of great products, great service and great people. This is what we live by today while constantly changing and moving forward. Hirsch’s Centurion recently celebrated their first decade, with suppliers and customers arriving from far and wide to celebrate their 10th birthday, the store was a hive of activity, with staff ready to ensure that the legendary ‘Hirsch Magical experience’ was enjoyed by all – with a Jumping castle, Face Painting, Popcorn, Candy Floss and DJ Arnold von Mash in the house – to ensure that children of all ages were entertained.
The Customers were all spoilt for choice with fantastic specials and massive savings. All joined in the birthday celebrations with the delicious cakes being served compliments of Miele, DeLongi, ELBA, SMEG and Defy. Snappy Chef, Samsung and SMEG also served cupcakes, while the Bosch Chef – Ingrid Betton had a host of different tiny tasters freshly prepared. Tefal, Russell Hobbs and George Forman were not to be outdone – with tasters of crumbed chicken and pasta. The Promoters were out in full force with coffee being served by Nespresso, DeLonghi, Dolce Gusto, Bosch, Defy and Miele. Snappy Chef, Whirlpool, SMEG and Defy all had a variety delicious tasters at their stands. Many of the Suppliers had lovely freebies of lanyards, pens, spatulas, party packs and bags up for grabs.
To add to this, some lucky customers walked off with fantastic prizes – adding to the festivities of the day.
Hirsch’s Centurion recently hosted their monthly Business Networking event, where more than 60 like-minded businesspeople met in order to showcase their businesses and network amongst each other.
The Guest Speaker for the morning, Vinesh Maharaj, a dynamic and inspiring Sales & Motivational Key Note Conference Speaker, Sales Training Expert and Sales Coach, believes that sales is the lifeblood of any business success.
The topic for the morning was ‘Sales Unusual’ where Vinesh explained that in order to get results a huge amount of action and hard work is needed. “Don’t stop until you get results – attack the sale! Success doesn’t knock on your door, you need to do the hard work” he said. In order to succeed he encouraged the listeners to decide what results they wanted and then to be more persistent, smarter, faster and committed.
After an inspiring and humorous presentation, each of the businesspeople were given the opportunity to introduce themselves and their business’.

Hirsch’s Silverlakes recently hosted their monthly Business Networking event with Guest Speaker for the event, Pieter du Plessis from Action Coach a business that provides business assistance, advice, coaching and mentoring services to SMME’s.
The topic Pieter spoke on was the 8 Habits of High Performance based on a study by Brad Sugars, and urged the audience to remember that success is all about consistency as there are no magic solutions. He expounded on the following points:
- ‘Relationships’ – the importance of investing and working on relationships
- ‘Learn before you Earn’ – attendance of Seminars, being Mentored and reading books.
- ‘Health is real Wealth’ – daily exercise and healthy eating
- ‘Starting with the End in Mind’ – dream charts, vision boards and a bucket list journal.
- ‘Work your Plans’ – spending time daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually in planning activities
- ‘Work harder on yourself than on your job’ – giving time to develop skills and on personal development
- ‘Self-Management’ – building “I am” statements around the different roles (eg. As a parent, spouse, child, entrepreneur)
- ‘Dream and Visualise’ – taking time daily to dream and ‘see’ where you would like to be
After a most inspiring and challenging message, each of the attendees were given the opportunity to present themselves and their business in a 30-second ‘elevator pitch’. Some lucky draw prizes were up for grabs, where after all present could network informally over light refreshments and a ‘legendary’ Hirsch’s cappuccino.
Recently Margaret Hirsch was invited to the British High Commissioner’s residence in Pretoria to attend the honorary British Empire Medal handover for long-time friend, Bronwen Jones.
Bronwen, a British engineering geologist, author, and passionate human rights activist, was honoured for her tremendous work with South Africa’s young burn victims and her actualisation of the charity “Children of Fire Trust” – a foundation that provides support and rehabilitation to these children.
Margaret and Allan Hirsch, Trustees of Bronwen’s other charity – the Johannesburg School of the Blind for low vision and multiple disability children, have also assisted by jointly purchasing the building which houses the charity.
